Somatic & Mind–Body Practice
Somatic Therapy
Overview, Who Is It For, and What To Expect During Your Session
Somatic therapy is an approach to healing that recognizes the body as the primary site of trauma, emotion, and stored experience. Drawing on the pioneering work of Wilhelm Reich, Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing), and Pat Ogden (Sensorimotor Psychotherapy), somatic approaches understand that trauma is not simply a mental phenomenon — it is held as physical tension, chronic bracing, dysregulated nervous system states, and interrupted body processes.
By working with body sensations, movement, breath, and posture alongside verbal processing, somatic therapy enables the release of what talk therapy alone cannot reach — the embodied residue of overwhelming experience. The result is a settled nervous system, greater embodiment, and the capacity to tolerate a wider range of experience.
Who is Somatic Therapy for?
Somatic therapy is for those dealing with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, chronic stress, dissociation, or a felt sense of disconnection from their body. It is also valuable for anyone who has found that traditional talk therapy has limitations and who wants to work with the body as a partner in healing.
What is Somatic Therapy beneficial for?
- •Resolution of trauma held in the body
- •Nervous system regulation and resilience
- •Increased embodiment and body awareness
- •Reduction of chronic pain and tension
- •Greater capacity for pleasure, connection, and aliveness
- •Integration of mind and body in the healing process
What to expect in a Somatic Therapy session
Sessions are conversational but include attention to the body throughout. Your practitioner will invite you to notice and track physical sensations, impulses, and movements as you explore your experience. The pace is slow and attuned. You remain fully clothed and in control of what you explore. Over time, sessions build your capacity to self-regulate and inhabit your body with more ease.
Typical session length: 50–90 minutes
